This Protein Coffee Mousse is a creamy, delicious dessert that combines the rich flavors of espresso and dark chocolate with the added benefit of protein powder. Perfect for a quick yet indulgent treat, it is whipped to airy perfection and chilled to set, making it an ideal make-ahead option for coffee lovers seeking a healthier mousse alternative.

Ingredients

Scale

Dairy and Coffee

  • 1 1/2 cup heavy cream (cold)
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup brewed espresso (cold)

Sweeteners and Protein

  • 1/4 cup confectioners sugar (or sugar substitute of your choice)
  • 2 tablespoons vanilla protein powder (or chocolate protein powder)

Chocolate

  • 4 ounces dark chocolate (melted and cooled – or sugar-free chocolate)

Instructions

  1. Whip the Cream: Add the cold heavy cream to a chilled mixing bowl and whip it using a hand mixer or stand mixer until stiff peaks form, which means the cream holds firm peaks when the whisk is lifted.
  2. Prepare the Coffee Mixture: In a separate bowl, combine the milk, cooled espresso, confectioners sugar or your choice of sugar substitute, protein powder, and the melted, cooled dark chocolate. Stir well until the mixture is smooth and homogeneous.
  3. Fold Together: Gently fold the whipped cream into the coffee mixture using a rubber spatula. Do this carefully to maintain the airy texture, folding until fully incorporated but not deflated.
  4. Chill and Set: Spoon or pour the combined mousse into individual serving bowls or ramekins. Refrigerate the mousse for at least 2-3 hours, allowing it to set properly and develop a creamy, mousse-like texture.

Notes

  • For a lower sugar version, use a sugar substitute suitable for baking in place of confectioners sugar.
  • You can substitute the vanilla protein powder for chocolate protein powder to intensify the chocolate flavor.
  • Melt the chocolate gently using a double boiler or microwave in short intervals to avoid burning.
  • Ensure the espresso and melted chocolate are cooled before mixing to prevent deflating the whipped cream.
  • Chilling the bowl and beaters before whipping the cream helps achieve stiff peaks more easily.
