Pretzel Crack Bars are a delightful sweet and salty treat featuring crunchy pretzels coated in a buttery, caramel-like sugar sauce, topped with melted chocolate chips and a sprinkle of sea salt. This easy-to-make dessert delivers a perfect balance of textures and flavors and is ideal for snacking or sharing.

Ingredients

Scale

Pretzel Base

  • 4 cups pretzels

Sugar Butter Sauce

  • 1 cup butter
  • 1 cup brown sugar

Topping

  • 3 cups chocolate chips
  • Sea salt, for sprinkling

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prepare Pan: Preheat your oven to 325°F (163°C). Line a large baking sheet with aluminum foil and spray it with nonstick cooking spray to prevent sticking.
  2. Arrange Pretzels: Spread the pretzels evenly in a single layer over the prepared baking sheet. Set aside.
  3. Melt Butter and Sugar: In a medium saucepan, melt the butter and brown sugar together over medium-low heat. Once melted, bring the mixture to a boil, stirring constantly. Continue boiling and stirring for 3 minutes to create a caramel-like sauce.
  4. Pour Sauce Over Pretzels: Carefully drizzle the hot sugar-butter mixture evenly over the pretzels. It’s okay if some areas are not fully covered, as the sauce will spread during baking.
  5. Bake Pretzels with Sauce: Place the baking sheet in the oven and bake for 10 minutes to allow the sauce to set and coat the pretzels.
  6. Add Chocolate Chips: Remove the baking sheet from the oven and immediately sprinkle the chocolate chips evenly over the hot pretzels. Return the sheet to the oven for 1 minute, just long enough to soften the chocolate.
  7. Spread Chocolate and Add Salt: Using a spatula, spread the softened chocolate chips evenly over the pretzel layer. Sprinkle a light amount of sea salt on top to enhance the flavor contrast.
  8. Set and Chill: Allow the bars to cool at room temperature for about 30 minutes to let the chocolate firm up. Then transfer to the refrigerator to chill completely, approximately 1 hour.
  9. Serve: Once chilled, remove the foil from the pan. Break the dessert into bars or use a knife to cut into squares and enjoy your sweet and salty pretzel crack bars!

Notes

  • Ensure constant stirring when boiling the sugar-butter mixture to prevent burning.
  • You can substitute regular pretzels with gluten-free ones if needed.
  • Store bars in an airtight container in the fridge for up to one week.
  • For extra flavor, add a sprinkle of cinnamon or chili powder to the butter-sugar mixture before boiling.
  • Use semi-sweet or dark chocolate chips depending on your taste preference.
