Ingredients

Scale

Dry Ingredients

  • 1 cup oat flour (or whole wheat flour as a substitute)
  • 1 cup grated carrots (about 2 medium carrots)
  • 1 cup grated apple (about 1 large apple, core and seeds removed)

Wet Ingredients

  • 1 egg
  • ½ cup unsweetened applesauce (optional for moisture)

Optional Substitutions

  • Almond flour or chickpea flour instead of wheat flour for dogs with allergies or dietary restrictions

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Ingredients: Wash and peel the carrots and apple thoroughly. Use a box grater or food processor to grate each until you have about one cup of grated carrots and one cup of grated apple, ensuring the apple core and seeds are removed completely for safety.
  2. Mix the Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine the grated carrots and apple. Crack the egg into the bowl and add the oat flour or your chosen flour alternative. If using, add the unsweetened applesauce to the mixture to enhance moisture. Stir thoroughly until the mixture forms a cohesive dough-like consistency.
  3. Shape the Treats: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. On a floured surface, roll out the dough to about ¼ inch thickness. Use cookie cutters to cut the dough into fun shapes. Alternatively, you can shape small balls or logs by hand if desired.
  4. Bake the Treats: Arrange the shaped dough pieces on the prepared baking sheet with a little space between each. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes or until the treats are firm and golden brown around the edges.
  5. Cool and Store: Remove the treats from the oven and allow them to cool completely on a wire rack. Once cooled, store the crunchies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one week, or refrigerate for longer freshness.

Notes

  • Always remove apple cores and seeds to prevent toxicity in dogs.
  • Consult your veterinarian before introducing new ingredients to your dog’s diet, especially if your pet has allergies or dietary restrictions.
  • For a softer treat, reduce baking time slightly or add more applesauce.
  • Flours can be substituted based on your dog’s tolerance; almond or chickpea flour are good gluten-free options.
  • Use unsweetened applesauce to avoid added sugars which can be harmful to dogs.
