Served with warm marinara sauce for dipping, this stromboli is the perfect savory treat for any meal or gathering.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Dough

  • 1 lb store-bought pizza dough (or homemade dough)
  • Flour for dusting

For the Filling

  • 1 lb ribeye or sirloin steak, thinly sliced
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 green bell pepper, thinly sliced
  • 4 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1.5 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning
  • ½ tsp red pepper flakes (optional)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

For Assembly

  • 1 egg (for egg wash)
  • 1 tbsp water
  • Marinara sauce, for dipping

Instructions

  1. Prep the Filling: Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the thinly sliced onions, green bell peppers, minced garlic, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables are soft and caramelized, about 8 to 10 minutes. Remove and set aside. In the same skillet, add the remaining tablespoon of olive oil and sear the steak slices over high heat for 2 to 3 minutes, seasoning with salt, pepper, and optional red pepper flakes. Remove from heat.
  2. Roll Out the Dough: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). On a clean, floured surface, gently stretch or roll out the pizza dough into a 12 by 16-inch rectangle, ensuring an even thickness for proper baking.
  3. Layer the Goodness: Evenly sprinkle the shredded mozzarella and grated Parmesan cheeses over the dough surface, leaving a 1-inch border on all sides. Next, distribute the cooked steak slices and caramelized vegetable mixture evenly across the cheese layer.
  4. Roll It Up: Starting from one of the long edges, carefully and tightly roll the dough over the filling into a log shape. Pinch the edges firmly to seal, preventing the filling from leaking during baking.
  5. Bake to Perfection: Place the rolled stromboli seam-side down on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. In a small bowl, whisk together the egg and water to create an egg wash. Brush the egg wash evenly over the top and sides of the stromboli. Using a sharp knife, cut 3 to 4 slits on the top to allow steam to escape. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes until the stromboli is golden brown and cooked through.
  6. Rest & Slice: Remove the stromboli from the oven and let it rest for 5 to 10 minutes to allow the juices to set. Slice into portions and serve warm with marinara sauce on the side for dipping.

Notes

  • Use ribeye for a more tender, flavorful steak, but sirloin works well for a leaner option.
  • For a spicier kick, increase the red pepper flakes or add a drizzle of hot sauce to the filling.
  • Allow the stromboli to rest before slicing to avoid the cheese and juices from spilling out.
  • Homemade pizza dough can be used if preferred for a fresher taste.
  • Make sure to seal the edges tightly to prevent leakage during baking.
  • Serve with marinara sauce warm for best flavor.
