Ingredients

Scale

Dough

  • 1 ¼ cup whole milk
  • 2 ¼ teaspoon Active Dry Yeast (or 1 packet)
  • ¼ cup honey
  • 4 tablespoons melted butter (divided)
  • 1 large egg (at room temperature)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 4 cups (480 grams) all-purpose or bread flour

Instructions

  1. Prepare Milk: Bring the milk to a near boil. Remove it from heat as soon as it begins to steam and small bubbles form around the edges. Allow it to cool down to lukewarm, between 80-90 degrees Fahrenheit.
  2. Activate Yeast: In a small bowl, combine the lukewarm milk, yeast, and honey. Stir well and let it sit for about 5 minutes until the mixture starts to foam, indicating the yeast is active.
  3. Mix Dough Ingredients: In a large bowl, mix 3 tablespoons of the melted butter, the milk and yeast mixture, room temperature egg, salt, and half of the flour. Mix slowly until smooth, using a stand mixer with a dough hook if available or mixing by hand.
  4. Add Remaining Flour: Gradually add the remaining flour to the dough mixture and continue mixing until a dough forms.
  5. Knead Dough: Knead the dough for 8 minutes using the mixer or by hand on a floured surface, then transfer to a floured surface and knead for a few additional minutes until smooth and elastic.
  6. First Rise: Spray a large bowl with cooking spray. Place the dough inside, cover with plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for about one hour, or until it has doubled in size.
  7. Shape Dough: Punch down the risen dough and roll it out on a floured surface to approximately ½ inch thickness. Fold the dough in half gently sealing the edges.
  8. Cut Rolls: Cut the folded dough into 24 even squares and place them on two lightly greased baking sheets.
  9. Second Rise: Cover the rolls loosely with plastic wrap or a damp cloth and let them rise for 30-40 minutes until doubled in size.
  10. Bake: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the rolls for 12-15 minutes or until the tops are lightly golden brown.
  11. Brush with Butter: Melt the remaining tablespoon of butter and brush it over the warm rolls immediately after baking for a shiny, soft crust.
  12. Serve: Serve these rolls warm with Copycat Texas Roadhouse butter or your favorite spread.

Notes

  • Ensure the milk is cooled to lukewarm (80-90°F) before adding yeast to avoid killing the yeast.
  • Use bread flour for a chewier texture or all-purpose flour for softer rolls.
  • For best results, let the dough rise in a warm, draft-free area.
  • You can use a bread machine on the dough cycle as an alternative to mixing and kneading by hand.
  • Brush the rolls with butter immediately after baking for a richer flavor and softer crust.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container and reheat gently to maintain softness.
