Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 2 ripe bananas, mashed
  • 1/2 cup natural peanut butter (unsalted, xylitol-free)
  • 1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 teaspoon olive oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon honey (optional)
  • Water, as needed

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven or Prepare Equipment: If baking, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. If using an air fryer, set it to 325°F (160°C). For dehydrating, preheat the dehydrator to 145°F (63°C).
  2. Mash the Bananas: In a large bowl, mash the ripe bananas until smooth with slight lumps remaining for texture.
  3. Combine Wet Ingredients: Add natural peanut butter, olive oil, and honey to the mashed bananas, stirring until the mixture is smooth and uniform.
  4. Add Dry Ingredients: Gradually fold in the whole wheat flour to the wet mixture until a thick dough forms. Add water one tablespoon at a time if the dough is too dry to bring it together.
  5. Knead the Dough: Transfer dough to a floured surface and knead for 2-3 minutes until it becomes smooth and pliable. Use additional flour if sticky.
  6. Shape the Sticks: Break the dough into golf ball-sized portions, then roll each piece into sticks about 4-5 inches long and 1/2 inch thick. Lightly wet your hands to smooth cracks if needed.
  7. Arrange the Sticks: Place the shaped sticks on the prepared baking sheet, air fryer basket, or dehydrator trays, spacing them evenly.
  8. Bake (Oven Method): Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until firm and lightly golden. Allow to cool completely on the baking sheet before serving.
  9. Air Fry (Air Fryer Method): Cook in batches for 8-10 minutes at 325°F (160°C), flipping halfway. Cool completely before serving.
  10. Dehydrate (Dehydrator Method): Dry for 6-8 hours at 145°F (63°C), checking occasionally for desired chewiness. Cool completely before serving.

Notes

  • Ensure peanut butter is unsalted and free of xylitol, which is toxic to dogs.
  • Whole wheat flour can be substituted with oat or rice flour for dogs with wheat sensitivities.
  • The honey is optional; omit if your dog has diabetes or is on a restricted diet.
  • Store the chew sticks in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one week or freeze for longer storage.
  • Always introduce new treats gradually to monitor your dog’s tolerance.
